Sindh Education and Literacy Minister Dr Hamida Khuhro has urged the society, especially parents, to assist the government in its efforts for promotion of education, saying "without putting this sector on top among our national priorities, we can not compete in the world." Addressing annual prize distribution ceremony and talent show 2004, arranged by the Bahria College Karsaz here on Thursday, Dr Khuhro said around 50 percent children of Sindh were out of schools and without education, while remaining did not have sufficient facilities.
There were also large number of shelterless and one or two room schools in which the students had no suitable climate of learning, she added.
Sindh Education Minister said President Pervez Musharraf was keen to provide strong educational base to nation and in that regard the federal government had given this sector priority but those efforts were result-less until masses at large and parents, specially, did not participate actively.
She lauded the services of Pakistan Navy, saying Navy along with safeguarding sea frontiers was also contributing to impart quality education to the masses.
"Our people have tremendous potential and there is no challenge or big task enough for our people, the faith is only pre-requisite" she added.
Dr Hamida Khuhro appreciated the performance of children shown in tableaus and said it was the hard work of teachers who explored the talent among the students.
She said the teacher was a key person to any change and development and "we have not only respect to them but to put those under pressure who are not serving nation with hard work and dedication".
She maintained those old concepts of education, old curricula and old teaching methodology could not be the right answer to the modern-day challenges.
Dr Hamida stressed for equipping younger generation with education, which could show the ways to tackle the new economic, social and technological challenges thrown by this modern age.
She opined that curricula of primary education was being revived by giving less text to the child and more activity and said the best teaching methodology was based upon activities, innovation and interaction.
She also appreciated the Pakistan Navy to give due attention to special children and urged the society to pay special attention to special children.
She appealed the financially sound and large schools of private sector to provide all possible facilities to special children towards their education.
Earlier, the Principal Bahria College Karsaz Commodore M Tayyab in his speech said Pakistan Navy was fully alive to give nation very stronger base of quality education at all level. He also presented the achievements of college towards curriculum and co-curriculum activities.
He announced Pakistan Navy was developing a separate school for special children with the cost of Rs 80 million with the help of Pakistan Navy Women Association and other philanthropists.
