The United States consulate in the Saudi city of Jeddah has reopened for the first time since an al Qaeda attack last month, the US embassy in Riyadh said on Sunday. "The consulate reopened on January 29th. It is back in full operation now," embassy spokeswoman Carol Kalin said.
Militants stormed the US consulate compound in the Red Sea city on December 6, killing five non-American consular staff. Four of the five attackers died in the attack and a fifth was wounded and arrested.
Kalin said the consulate had provided emergency services and welcomed American pilgrims who came to Mecca earlier this month, but only reopened fully to the public on Saturday.
"We're very confident that the security measures we have built, and rebuilt, make it safe for people to come for visa services," she added.
