We are a nation of hypocrites. We say 'I am proud to be a Pakistani' but we have no love for our country neither do we have nationalism within us. I write this letter with great pain in my heart because I cannot do anything to punish these hypocrites. I was powerless when I saw our national monument the Teen Talwar, with the golden words of Quaid-e-Azam inscribed on it, being vandalised both by the government and commercial organisations who put up their banners on it.
Did the government have no other place to put the EXPO 2005 banners than between the swords? Did the PSO have no other place to put up their banners? Why did they not put them on their PSO House, which is only a few hundred yards away? Who were the officials who gave them the permission to desecrate this national monument? Breeds there men with souls so dead?
All this was done to celebrate Eid. Is this the way to celebrate Eid by desecrating a national monument? I would not be surprised if some day banners are put around the dome of Quaid's mazar.
I am sure all the government officials from the Governor to the Chief Minister and the Corps Commander must have passed through this monument several times, yet not one of these loyal, patriotic people had even the slightest thought of taking corrective action.
What are we coming to? When will we be a nation proud of its heritage? Would a British or an American or for that matter any foreigner think of vandalising their national monuments in their country? I say shame, shame on all of us Pakistanis including myself. If there are tears to shed, shed them now.
