In China, the leader of the country's top advisory body said ethnic and religious harmony was imperative in safeguarding peaceful social development. The National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (NCCPPCC) Chairman Jia Qinglin said on Monday during visits to Beijing's ethnic Hui Niujie community, and meetings with the Islamic and Buddhist institutions. It was Jia Qinglin's 12th New Year's visit in as many years to Niujie, a compact area inhabited by the Hui nationality.
Next was a workshop with Islamic and Buddhist representatives. Jia Qinglin stressed the importance of ethnic and religious work in the country's social development. He said the government and Party departments at all levels should show special concern to ethnic minorities and religious groups, especially for the needy during seven-day long Spring Festival, beginning on Wednesday.
Jia Qinglin announced the government would allocate special funds to upgrade the working facilities of religious groups and institutions nation wide. The representatives promised to do more for a harmonious society.
