Oxford University Press launched Shaukat Raza Mirza's account of the historic employee buyout of Exxon Chemical (Pakistan). The book entitled From Exxon to Engro, relates the corporate drama leading to the creation of Engro Chemical Pakistan Ltd and the subsequent growth of the organisation. It highlights Shaukat Mirza's central role as he relates the discussions, decisions, and challenges he faced as he propelled his team to achieving exemplary success.
He talks about the individuals involved and the constraints he encountered, as well as personal joys and disappointments. Shaukat Mirza's outstanding professional attributes and exceptional business acumen are brought actively to the forefront in achieving this venture.
Shaukat Raza Mirza began his career with Esso Eastern in 1962. After a series of assignments in the United States, Pakistan and Hong Kong, he was appointed President and Chief Executive Officer of Exxon Chemical Pakistan Ltd in 1988, and elected Chairman of the Board of Directors of the company. In 1991, Shaukat Mirza successfully led an employee buyout of Exxon equity in the company in partnership with international and local financial institutions. The company was renamed Engro Chemical Pakistan Ltd.
He retired in July 1997 as President and CEO of ECPL. In February 2000, he was appointed Managing Director, Pakistan State Oil Company Ltd. He died tragically at the age of 62, in Karachi.
The launch ceremony was well attended by corporate executives, bureaucrats, diplomats, and journalists.
Commenting on the book and the author, the chief guest, Syed Babar Ali, Chairman, Packages and the guest speakers, Shahid Hag, MD, PARCO, and Asad Umar, CEO, Engro Chemical, said that Shaukat Mirza's story is one about leadership, farsightedness and integrity as he made his vision of excellence a reality. They further added that From Exxon to Engro is not only a Pakistani success story; it is an Asian and, indeed, a global success story. Arshy Aziz, editor of the book, and Naheed Shaukat Mirza also spoke on the occasion.
Earlier in her introductory address, Ameena Saiyid, Managing Director, Oxford University Press, welcomed the guests and highlighted some of the latest hooks of the publishing house. She said: "From Exxon to Engro is a great contribution to the economic development of both industry and business, and can be studied as a business model for others to follow."-PR
