Three dacoits and as many policemen were killed in an encounter with criminals here on Wednesday morning, while a citizen was gunned down by the criminals earlier during a dacoity. According to police sources, four armed dacoits barged into the house of one Muhammad Ayaz, assistant manager, National Bank of Pakistan, Kangniwala branch, at Amenabad Ghalla Mandi early on Wednesday.
When Ayaz resisted, the dacoits opened fire, killing him on the spot. Hearing gunshots and hue and cry of the family, neighbours and local guard rushed to the house, and managed to nab one of the dacoits identified later as Mudassar, while others fled from the scene.
The dacoit was handed over to police. On information provided by the arrested dacoit, police conducted a raid at a house in Kot Shafi Adhurai. The police cordoned off the area and asked the dacoits to surrender.
The dacoits opened indiscriminate fire, resulting in the death of three members of the police party, constables Muhammad Shahid Khalil Ahmad and Ansar, while ASI Ubaidullah and constable lmtiaz Ahmad sustained injuries.
The police party returned fire, as a result of which three dacoits were gunned down. One was from Daska and two from Shakkargarh area.
