Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ibad has said that youths constitute a very powerful force, which should be utilised properly. He stated this at the concluding session of "Sindh Provincial Youth Convention", organised jointly by the Karachi University (KU) and Higher Education Commission (HEC), here on Friday. He said, "We are facing a serious issue of educated youths who are unemployed and are facing economic problems, which leads them towards negative activities."
He recalled that it was heartening to know that several terrorists arrested from Karachi are educated youths and due to joblessness they have indulged in terrorism-related incidents.
To cope with this issue, we have to provide awareness to our youths, who are lacking consultation and reconciliation, to resolve their problems," he said.
He appreciated the KU and HEC efforts for organising the youth convention and termed it marvellous for everyone in the province.
Earlier, provincial Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Qamar Mansoor said that the Government of Sindh is soon organising an international youth conference in an effort to interact with foreign youths.
Karachi University Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Pirzada Qasim Raza Siddiqui said that traditions demand continuity as isolated events only point to disorganised state of affairs.
The KU would regularly organise such events for youths within the university and in collaboration with other institutions of the province, he said, adding that President General Pervez Musharraf had conceived the idea of youth convention. He said that the first national youth convention, which was held in Islamabad, was described as a "great success" by the independent observers.
Pirzada Qasim said that about 20,000 students are studying in the university. The university has a strong ongoing research programme and it had produced 429 Ph.Ds and 332 M.Phils in various disciplines of sciences, arts, Islamic Learning and pharmacy during 1995 to 2004.
Later, the Sindh governor distributed prizes among the winners of speech contests, held during the youth convention.
Miss Hiba Tohid of Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS) secured first prize. Miss Asra Jaffery of Jinnah University for Women bagged second prize, while Arif Amin of Liaquat University of Health Sciences secured the third prize.
