Principal Army Medical College, Major General Shujaat Hussain said that Chinese government was providing free utilities to industrialists and also guiding them for giving boost to their businesses. He stated this at a first consultative meeting on research and development, drug testing laboratory and clinical trial centre at Punjab Industrial Estates (PIE) offices. The meeting was presided over by PIE Chairman, Mohsin Syed, says a PIE spokesman here on Friday.
The Chairman PIE Mohsin Syed informed in his briefing that project of Sundar Industrial Estate, was conceived by Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi, Chief Minister Punjab and he provided seed money of Rs one billion. The Sundar Industrial Estate is one of its own kind, where roads are of concrete and iron, electricity will be produced in house, all wiring would be underground, central effluent plant will be constructed and top of all the research & development, combine drug testing laboratory/molecular discovery, clinical trials centre, will be set up for which chief minister of Punjab has already granted Rs 50 million and PIE has allotted 2.39 acres of land for it.
Major General Shujaat Hussain said that Pakistan must also adopt policies being pursued by China for bringing industrial revolution in the country. He added that he had always openly supported and talked about the Sundar Industrial Estate and the vision, opulence and involvement of educated and talented personnel on every forum. Talking about pharma section in SIE he hoped it would be very well organised and modern. He added that the Pakistani drugs are of international standard.
Dr Fareed Malik, Chairman, Pakistan Science Foundation said on the occasion that Pakistan science foundation had published a directory of technology linking. He made an offer to construct science centre, where research & development, clinical trials, molecular discovery, quality control testing, biotechnology and scientific and management training could be given. He further said that PSF was making a triangle of end user, researchers and science foundation.
Dr Ikram ul Haq, Director Drug Testing Laboratory, Lahore, said on the occasion that the laboratory at SIE would not only serve the Pakistani pharmaceutical industry but also help to promote export of medicines. He said quality of Pakistani drugs was of international standard but unfortunately some people were wrongly projecting the quality issues.
World Health Organisation (WHO) representative and regional co-ordinator, Dr Ismat Ullah Chaudhry, assured on behalf of WHO that all out support for guidance, continued technical support and help in WHO accredited laboratory would be provided.
Muhammad Usman from Sundar pharma sector said in Sundar Industrial Estate not only world class pharmaceutical industry would be established but also the pharma industry of Sundar would produce short supply essential branded drugs. The multinational companies would be offered to guide which type of production facility they require. He stated that world pharma market would be 600 billion dollars in the year 2005-2006, whereas Pakistan pharma market would be 0.9 billion dollars.
