Ko-Ordination Group, a social welfare project of Kalia Group, has set up another computer centre on Thursday (February 10) for needy students at Sukkur. Sindh Minister for Information and Technology (IT) Syed Mustafa Kamal was the chief guest in the inaugural ceremony. Hanif S. Kalia, chairman Ko-Ordination Group (KRG), Dr Saira Bano, general secretary KRG, Nasir H. Shah, District Nazim, Haji Abdul Aziz Shiwani, Abdul Majeed Abdani and Arif Mandela also spoke.
Mustafa Kamal said Sukkur would be made as model IT district of the province very soon and steps were being taken in this regard. He said a tremendous work had been done in last few years in the promotion of IT, but there was a need to pace up the process.
"This concept is not true that no progress is made in IT sector, he said, adding, "the government has planned to establish 800 free IT centres in the province within one-and-a-half year, while eight centres have already been established in various districts of Sindh."
"Legislation is under way to devise policy for Internet cafes and it would be implemented in next 15 days. A three-foot wall with provision of open space will be mandatory for all net cafes. Action will be taken against those failing to meet criteria and finally will be closed," he added.
He said the government was playing its role as a facilitator in promotion of IT and would encourage all such activities in the province. "In this era, progress can not be witnessed without having command on IT," he said.
Giving example of Israel, he said people were against this country, but no one could deny of its tremendous progress in the field of IT, for which it was ruling in America and floating ideas in various other countries. "No progress can be made in the country without bringing people of rural area in front line," he said.
He appreciated the effort of Ko-Ordination Group and urged private sector and NGOs to come forward and play their role supplementing the government's efforts for promotion of IT in the province.
Chairman KRG Hanif S. Kalia said they had opened computer centres in various places, including Hyderabad Foundation School, Hyderabad Women Prison, Chohar Jamali Thatta, Hala, Dhoronaro, Sukkur. "Our aim is to promote IT in the country and we are preferably focusing on computer training. India has progressed 100 percent than Pakistan in IT sector, he said and urged all stakeholders to devise joint strategies to achieve goals."
He praised interest of the IT minister and hoped that practical work on the proposed Internet City at Super Highway Karachi would be initiated. "Karachi can also become an IT city," he added.
Earlier, Dr Saira Bano and Haji Abdul Aziz Shiwani informed the participants of the ceremony that this computer centre was fully equipped and would facilitate students of remote areas. "It will also impart training to people along with continuing their jobs in evening and night shifts. For the centre 10 computers have been donated by the KRG, they added.-PR
