The leather garment exporters have urged the member, Export, Central Board of Revenue (CBR), to revise the public notice on weight variation, which suggests that the export consignments with over 10 percent weight difference will be stopped from shipment. Pakistan Leather Garments Manufacturers and Exporters Association (Plgmea) Chairman Fawad Ijaz Khan, in a statement here on Friday, said that it was a very harsh decision to treat weight difference cases as misdeclaration and subject to adjudication.
"The decision is not acceptable to the exporters since it will create several problems for them," he added.
He explained that most exporters had tried to ensure that instances of weight difference should not occur, but some time such cases cropped up inevitably.
Fawad suggested that more feasible and practical approach should be to allow shipments after making necessary amendments in the shipping documents. This would save the exporters from a lot of hassle and waste of the considerable time in making shipments, he added.
It may be pointed out that the Collectorate of Customs (Export) issued a public notice 01/2005 on January 13, which stipulated that all export consignments, with more than 10 percent variation in weight, would be from February 1 detained.
These would not be allowed till the completion of adjudication proceedings or as directed by the Collector of Exports.-PR
