American Andre Agassi was upset by Austria's Jurgen Melzer 6-3, 6-1 in the quarter-finals of the 380,000 ATP San Jose hardcourt tournament Friday. "It's always tough to come out to play Andre," Melzer said. "I didn't want him to play his game. He makes you run like a dog all over the court." The second seed Agassi's only prior loss this year was to world No. 1 Roger Federer of Switzerland in the Australian Open quarter-finals.
"I had opportunities to loosen myself up," Agassi said. "But I didn't convert on the big points."
In Friday's final match, defending champion and top seeded American Andy Roddick rallied to defeat Sweden's Thomas Enqvist, 3-6, 7-6 (8-6), 7-5.
In the second-set tiebreaker, Roddick won the first six points, then dropped the next six before winning the final two.
In the 12th game of the third set, he broke Enqvist at 15 to win the match.
Roddick is playing in his first event since a disappointing loss to Australian Lleyton Hewitt in the semi-finals of the Australian Open.
He defeated fellow American Mardy Fish in the final here last year, when the tournament was known as the Siebel Open.
In Friday's other quarter-finals, third seed Tommy Haas of Germany rallied to defeat No. 8 Max Mirnyi of Belarus, 6-7 (2-7), 7-6 (7-3), 6-2, but fourth-seeded American Vincent Spadea was upset by Frenchman Cyril Saulnier, 6-2, 6-4.
In the semi-finals, Saulnier will face Melzer, while Haas will meet Roddick.
