The NWFP government has sought the help of Central government for the rehabilitation of the people, affected by recent devastated rains and snowfalls in the province. This was stated by Chief Minister Akram Khan Durrani while talking to journalists here on Sunday before departing for a visit to the affected areas of the province. "The provincial government has already released Rs 60 million for the relief activities while I personally have apprised the Prime Minister of the losses caused by the recent devastated rains and snowfall in the province," he said.
There was a dire need of financial aid from the central government so as the damaged houses could be repaired and the victim families could be compensated, he added.
The people of NWFP deserve generous financial help of the central government, he said, adding that his government had apprised the central government of the province's rights in effective manners and if it failed to redress the NWFP grievances then "we will adopt the third way."
He said that in the Federal cabinet meeting he would raise the issue of the province's rights and would apprise it of the losses incurred to the people of the Frontier due to heavy rains and snowfall.
Replying to a question regarding the help of army the Chief Minister said: "If we felt the need of army in our relief activities then we will make a request for that as well."
The Chief Minister told journalists that the provincial government had asked the relief commissioner, all MPAs, district nazims and district co-ordination officers (DCOs), to help affectees of the recent heavy snowfall and torrential rains in the province. Announcing the compensation package, he said that the family of every person, who killed during the calamity would be given Rs 100,000 while the seriously injured would get Rs 30,000 and other injured would be given Rs 20,000.
He directed to send the compensation cheques to the affected families as the earliest.
The chief minister directed the DCOs to provide food and medicines to the people on emergency basis where any shortage of edibles was reported.
He said that funds had already been provided for the relief work while necessary machinery had also been dispatched to open the roads for traffic and start repairing of the damaged roads immediately.
He thanked the Sindh Chief Minister for giving Rs 50 million special grant for the rain-affected people of NWFP and asked the philanthropists to contribute generously in the relief fund of the provincial government so as the affectees could be compensated in a better manner.
