Punjab Agriculture Minister Arshad Khan Lodhi has said that wheat is country's major crop and its protection was the joint responsibility of farmers and agriculture department. According to spokesman of Punjab government, the minister expressed these views during his visit to various Barani areas on Sunday. The minister said that due to recent rains wheat production would increase and if weeds were eliminated, per acre yield could go up by 30-40 percent.
He also assured the farmers that agriculture department would implement the recommendations of the cultivators. Arshad Lodhi said ensuring development in agriculture and achieving self-reliance in agri production was the mission of the provincial government. He further said that the government had enhanced the budget of agri sector from Rs 730 million to Rs 3 billion, which is a record increase.
The minister also informed the peasants that in case of pest attack there was no need to spray pesticides and the problem could be overcome by spreading crop-friendly insects in the fields.
