The Capital Development Authority (CDA) is considering to construct a tunnel in the Margalla hills to expand the city in the north and also to meet the edible needs of the inhabitants of the Capital. The matter came to the notice during a meeting of Chairman CDA, Kamran Lashari with President General Pervez Musharraf about renovation of Convention Centre for the next OIC summit in the capital.
"The President has shown keen interest in construction of the tunnel and directed the CDA to prepare a feasibility report as early as possible in this regard, said Chairman CDA Kamran Lashari.
Talking to APP, Lashari said that the idea was too good and beneficial for the expansion of the city, however, he added that it was too early to say something about start of work on the project.
He said that various options about the project were being studied while technical experts to be consulted before start of work on this gigantic project.
He added that private sector to be invited to make the project practical as the authority had no heavy machinery like cutters, bulldozers to cutting the hill.
About cost of the project, Chairman CDA said that it was a huge project and the authority would try its best to complete it from its own kitty.
Lashari said that the distance between Islamabad and district Hazara of the NWFP would be reduced to a great extent and the people would have easy access to easily move between the two cities.
According to a survey, majority of the people of Hazara district are working in the twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad and they are facing a lot of residential problems due to shortage of housing units here.
A number of government employees told APP that after construction of the tunnel they would prefer to go to their home towns daily instead of living here in high rented houses as the distance between Islamabad and various parts of Hazara district would be travelled only in one hour.
The project would also meet the edible problems of the dwellers of the city as the food commodities would be easily transported from Hazara district to Islamabad and Rawalpindi. The project would also boost the agriculture sector of Hazara district. The lush green pollution free belt of Hazara district would be a splendid addition to the planned city of Islamabad.
