Women councillors and female activists of NGOs on Sunday observed two hours token hunger strike in ten districts of Southern Punjab as a protect against the proposal of cutting down the seats of women councillors and depriving them of their 33 percent share as ensured by the General Pervez Musharraf Government. This protest rally was organised at the call of Lady Councillors network and Pattan organisation.
"We have established hunger strikers camps in Multan, Muzaffargarh, Khanewal, Jalalpur Pirwala, Dera Ghazi Khan, Sahiwal, Pakpattan, Rajanpur, Leiah, Lodhran, and Vehari on Sunday as a protest against reduction in women seats in Local councils and staged demonstrations," said Naseema Khan Councillor.
"Women seats in local councils would be reduced from 36,110 to 18,066 while special seats of Farmers and Labourers would cut from 24, 088 to 12,044 and we would foil the bid of males dominating bureaucracy to amend the ordinance and depriving the women of representation of more than 50 percent of total population," said Sehrish Khan District Councillor.
The camp was attended by Hussan Bano, Razia Bibi, Farhat Bibi, Nasima Bilal, Lubna Mumtaz Bhatti, Suraiya Asghar, Shehnaz Anjum, Gulshan Naureen, Shenaz, Haleema Saadia, Um-e-Kalsoom, Sardar Bibi, Giloria Almas, Naseem Akhtar, Khurshida Bibi, Nasim Ansari, Khalida, Aisha, Mutafa Baloch, Shah Nawaz, Islamuddin Adil, Feroza Ashiq Bhutta, Hafeez Joiya, Rao Abrar, Nazar Abbas Qadri.
