Soomro briefs UK Parliamentarians on government steps to strengthen democracy
Senate Chairman Muhammedmian Soomro has said the government has taken appropriate steps to strengthen the economy, alleviate poverty and raise standard of life of the people. He stated this while welcoming a four-member delegation of Liberal Democrats of United Kingdom (UK), led by MP Simon Hughes, which called on the Senate Chairman him here. Soomro said owing to the government's steps, the economy had been consolidated and all its indicators were showing upward trend.
He said the stock exchange was moving up and foreign exchange reserves had increased to a significant level. Besides, he said: "We have stopped borrowing and development on many mega projects is going on satisfactorily," he said.
Soomro also apprised the delegation about the composition of Pakistan Senate and its working.
The Senate Chairman said women had been given much representation in the House of Parliament, who encouraged to play their due-role in the development of the country.
He also apprised the delegation about the Kashmir issue and its implication and its importance for the region.
MP Simon Hughes, who is also President of the Liberal Democrats, said: "We are glad to see fast moving economy of Pakistan."
He said Pakistan was moving on the right track of progress, and assured the Senate Chairman of assistance in the field of education and others sectors to facilitate the new generation in the development of the country.
Simon Hughes said his party was taking the Kashmir issue very seriously and would take it with the Indian leadership during their visit to India. Later, Muhammadmian Soomro hosted a dinner in the honour of visiting UK delegation at his residence.
A large number of Federal ministers, state ministers, parliamentarians, besides a number of officials participated in the talks.
