The Sindh government has given a final shape to establish seven more Satellite Agro-Export Processing Zones in the province with the cost of Rs 169 million. This was stated by Advisor to Chief Minister for Food and Agriculture, Murtaza Khan Jatoi, at a briefing on the plan for setting up of these zones. He said, besides main centre at Karachi, these centres would be established at Mirpurkhas, Sakrand, Naushahro Feroz, Badin, Khairpur, Hosri and Ghotki.
Murtaza Jatoi said, with the establishment of these centres; the exports would not only register significant increase, but also help promote national economy.
He pointed out that, besides increase in the income of growers of fruits, vegetables and flowers, the role of middleman would also be eliminated. He said this would help increase in employment opportunities for the local people while the standard of trained labour, handling, grading, packing, transport, operation will also be improved satisfactorily.
The Advisor was informed that a 50-acre land had been acquired at Super Highway, near Karachi, for the Agro-Export Processing Zone and development works started there, which includes office block, display centre, conference hall, mosque, water tanks etc. The work on development of plots in the zone has also started.
During the briefing, Jatoi said that infrastructure was being improved to facilitate the private sector whereby facilities of grading, waxing, packing and processing would be available for them at the zone.
The meeting was told that the seven satellite zones would be set up on plots of 10 acres each where ten plots for processing units and 10 shops would be allocated to growers. The layout plan for the same has already been approved.
