Karachi Electric Supply Company has again disconnected the power supply of Karachi Water & Sewerage Board due to non-payment of bills. According to the KESC spokesman, the unpaid electricity bills of Karachi Water & Sewerage Board has accumulated to Rs 9.53 million which was not forthcoming despite repeated reminders from the KESC, consequently the power supply of the KWSB offices were disconnected.
The KESC has disconnected power supply of the six KWSB offices as yet, while all the city water pumps continue to receive uninterrupted electricity.
The spokesman rejected the impression that the KESC has also disconnected the power supply of residential colonies or resident of the KWSB MD.
Last December, on power disconnection for similar reasons a meeting was convened on the directive of Sindh Governor, chaired by the Principal Secretary to the Governor and attended by the City Nazim, KESC MD, KWSB MD, Sindh Secretary Finance and DCO Karachi, in which it was decided that CDGK and KWSB will make payments to the KESC by December 31, 2004.
According to the KESC, KWSB has only paid 50 percent of the dues and the amount again started accumulating over which power supply was disconnected.
The KESC during the last 12 months have repeatedly requested the water board for settling their dues but the board on one or the other pretext avoided payments.
The power utility finds it ethically wrong to allow government connections defaulting in payments while disconnect the ordinary consumers' supply on non-payment of bills, the spokesman concluded.
