Pakistan Council of Research in Water Resources (PCRWR) will spend Rs 177.20 million for the completion of a project to harness water potential through the use of appropriate technologies in the country. Ministry of Science and Technology has approved the development of Participatory National Integrated Water Management Programme, which has designed such as construction of new reservoirs, improving efficiency through water course-lining, improving farm layout, levelling of fields, use of high efficiency system etc.
Pakistan currently has 15 maf of storage capacity with an annual demand of 100maf of irrigation water. The water resources of Pakistan, both surface and ground water, are insufficient to meet its growing demands.
The situation calls for immediate action to develop all possible water resources and conserve and utilise the available water resources judiciously.
The current project is aimed to achieve this objective and would be an important tool to bridge the gap between demand and supply leading to socio-economic uplift of the country.
Altogether 10 pilot projects will be established in all four provinces including Northern areas of Pakistan. Out of these three in Punjab, two in Sindh, one in Balochistan, one in uplands of NWFP, one in desert, one in Barani and one in Northern Areas will be established.
Federal Minister for Science and Technology Chaudhry Nouraiz Shakoor has said that agriculture is the key part of country's economy and water plays a major role in the agricultural growth.
About 95 percent of the available water resources are used by the agricultural development of the country, which is important for the economic growth of our country.
He instructed the authorities to ensure timely completion of the project.
