As many as 50,970 leprosy patients have been registered in the country in the last fifty years, 65 percent of these were detected in Sindh with Karachi contributing the highest numbers of 40 percent of the whole figure. An average of 800 new cases, 40percent only from Karachi, are still being detected every year throughout the country.
The metropolitan city of Karachi has only two centres for treatment of leprosy patients, one is being run by City District Government Karachi at Manghopir and the other by Marie Adelaide Leprosy Center (MALC) run by an NGO and its 80 percent budget is paid by German Leprosy Relief Association.
A hut in Bagger Colony at near I.I. Chundrigar Road was developed into the Headquater of National Leprosy Programme and the residents of the surrounding areas have been demanding to shift these patients at any proper place.
City District Government Karachi in collaboration with MALC, will establish rehabilitation centre for leprosy patients in Karachi.
Many of the places have been marked for establishing of this centre and one of them would be sellected.
The centre requires a separate place because of its sensivity so the centre will be established in suburbs of the city.
