At least three people, including Sajjada Nashin of Bari Imam's Shrine, Raja Mohammad Akram, were gunned down and four received severe injuries on Tuesday in an ambush. Gunmen sprayed bullets at Raja Akram as he returned to the Bari Imam's Shrine near the diplomatic compound in Islamabad after attending the funeral of his relative Raja Khurshid Dil, the police said. The bodyguard of Raja Akram and attacker were also among the dead.
As a result of cross firing, Raja Mohammad Akram, his gunman Ijaz and Mohammed Saeed (attacker) died on the spot. The injured were immediately rushed to Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) and Federal Government Services Hospital-Policlinic Islamabad. The bodies were also sent to the PIMS hospital for autopsy.
Those who received injures were identified as Hafeezur Rehman, Abrar Hussain, police head constable, Mohammad Riaz and Riaz Hussain. Islamabad police spokesman said that Raja Tauqeer, who has been declared proclaimed offender in several cases, had a longstanding dispute with Raja Akram over the management of Bari Imam Complex.
Tauqeer along with his accomplices was hiding near the backdoor of the shrine where he intercepted Raja Akram and sprayed volley of bullets at them. In retaliation, Raja Akram-led group also started firing and killed Mohammad Saeed of the opponent party, the police said.
The Secretariat Police have not registered the case till the filing of this report.
Islamabad SSP Liaquat Ali Khan, Additional SP Mehboob Aslam and other senior officials reached the site after receiving the news of the incident.
It was learnt that numerous clashes had been reported during the last one decade between these two rival groups, claiming several lives and leaving many injured.
The authorities have also said that the incident is not a result of sectarian clash.
