President General Pervez Musharraf stated on Thursday that Pakistan is an ideological country created in the name of Islam and it is therefore our duty to project Islam in its true perspective as a religion of tolerance, peace and knowledge. The President made these remarks while chairing a meeting on the proposed Iqbal International Islamic Institute for Research, Education and Dialogue.
He observed that unfortunately there are grave misperceptions about the religion of Islam and stressed upon the need to address these issues not only within the Ummah but the entire world.
President Musharraf stated that the idea of setting up an institute for contemporarily thinking in Pakistan arose following consultations with Muslim intellectuals from 17 countries in Islamabad in November 2004.
The President enumerated various measures, which Pakistan had proposed for the restructuring of the OIC including recommendations for the setting up a department of Islamic thought in the organisation.
Every one is onboard with regard to the need for having an institute of contemporary learning and there is a need to work out and finalise methodology in this regard, he said.
A group of Pakistani and foreign academicians led by noted scholar. Dr Riffat Hassan gave a presentation on the proposed Iqbal International Institute.
The President commended the efforts put in by all concerned and directed that the proposal be finalised.
Federal ministers for education, religious affairs, chairman higher education as well as the minister of state for education and religious affairs were also present on the occasion.
