Social media platforms have been filled with statements and comments in their appreciation and support for Team India in Rio Olympics 2016. Rather than giving round of applaud to Dipa Karmakar, barring one exceptional performance by gymnast, Shobha De, a well-known Indian novelist and columnist, displaying her absolute lack of understanding of sportsmanship, she criticized team India in a distasteful manner on Twitter.
According to Indian media reports; the 68-year-old considered Abhinav Bindra as India's best hope for medal, but he bowed out finishing 4th in the 10m Air Rifle event. Twitter has since been rife with tweets slamming the writer who is well-known for her bold statements on topical issues. Writer Shobha De invited controversy on Monday when she mocked at the Indian athletes participating at the Rio Olympics, after some of them came close to winning a medal but faltered at the final hurdle.
According to Shobhaa De on Twitter, “Goal of Team India at the Olympics: Rio jao. Selfies lo. Khaali haat wapas aao. What a waste of money and opportunity,” she tweeted on Monday.
She has been in the thick of controversies on several occasions in the past over her tweets which according to many, are often in bad taste with involving opinions and movie reviews that draw reactions from celebrities and common people. She had earlier body shamed Kate Middleton and received a lot of flak for her comments. She has remained a controversial figure in the social media circle.
Along with Indian audience, Bollywood actress Sonam Kapoor and Sonakshi Sinha has also reacted to her statement, which has discouraged the Indian athletes performing in Rio.
