US lifestyle guru Martha Stewart left prison just after midnight on Friday at the end of a five month term for lying about a share deal but with her reputation back on the rise. Smiling and waving, the 63-year-old head of a vast media empire flew in a private jet from an airport near the Alderson women's prison to her private estate north of New York city where she will now have to spend five months under house arrest.
Wearing jeans and a knitted poncho, Stewart did not stop to talk to the 15 fans and army of reporters waiting at the gates of the minimum security camp in the West Virginia countryside.
But Stewart said in a statement on her website: "The experience of the last five months in Alderson, West Virginia, has been life altering and life affirming."
Stewart and her daughter Alexis flew back to the family's 62-hectare (163-acre) country estate at Bedford, 65 kilometres (40 miles) north of New York where she will be confined for the next five months.
