Five passengers were killed and another 16 injured when one bogey of a passenger train was derailed near Ferozwala on Lahore-Narowal section of the railway on Saturday. According to District Police Officer (DPO) Shahid Iqbal, the 212-F passenger train, which was going from Lahore to Narowal, when reached near Sri Rampura Babakwal Station on Kala Khatai road, Ferozewala, derailed and turned turtle. As a result, five passengers died on the spot, while 16 others received injuries.
The injured were shifted to Mayo Hospital, Lahore, where condition of ten was stated to be precarious.
Soon after the incident, the DPO, Sheikhupura, along with a police party reached the spot. He arranged shifting of injured passengers to the hospital on police vehicles.
Railway officials including the general-manager arrived soon. They jointly undertook the rescue operation and pulled out those trapped under the fallen bogey.
Federal Minister Mian Shamim Haider told APP that a committee headed by Pakistan Railways chairman Shakeel Durrani has been set up to conduct an inquiry and submit the report to him within three days.
He said strict action would be taken against railways officers who were found negligent in the performance of their duty.
