Myanmar's military government has released veteran politician and democracy activist U Thu Wai after a short time restricting his movements, a political associates said on Sunday. "The authorities lifted the restrictions imposed on his movements on Thursday and sent him back from Taunggyi to Yangon on Friday. He is in good health," U Win Naing told Reuters.
He said that Daw Cho Cho Kyaw Nyein, another pro-democracy politician, and her daughter, who were also temporarily detained together with U Thu Wai on February 8, had also been sent back to Yangon together with U Thu Wai. "They were not arrested as we thought earlier. They were just confined to a Taunggyi hotel, where they were staying on February 8," said U Win Naing.
U Thu Wai, 73, is one of most respected democracy activists in Myanmar. He has been imprisoned several times for his political activities. He last went to prison in 1995 and released in a mass release on December 12, 2004.
