Punjab Fisheries Department during the current fiscal year, will add 1900 hectares of more land from private sector to the existing 6600 hectares of land under aqua-culture network in the province. Director General Fisheries Punjab Dr Mohammnad Ayub told APP here on Wednesday that the department was currently engaged in scientific evolution of new fast-growing, disease-resistant fish varieties to boost fish production in the country. He said that series of experiments was being conducted in different hatcheries across the province in this regard.
A well-equipped lab is functioning at Manawan Research & Training Institute to undertake multi-disciplinary research on various aspects of fisheries and aqua-culture.
Fish farming has become more popular in recent times, and scores of traditional farmers are converting their agri-farms to fish farms for greater profits.
Fish seeds of various popular species like Rohu, Non, Thaila, Grass Carp, Silver Carp, Common Carp, Big Head and Mahaseer are available. As many as 42 sale points have been set up in the province to provide fish seeds at subsidised rates.
