Speakers at a group discussion here on Thursday have asked the government to provide equal opportunities to women so that they could play their due role in the country's economic growth. The Ministry of Law, Justice and Human Rights Regional Directorate of Human Rights arranged the discussion on the topic of "Human Rights and Women Empowerment". Among others, the Provincial Minister for Special Education Qudsia Lodhi, Advisor to Chief Minister Punjab Rana Ijaz Ahmed and people from other walks of life attended the function.
The participants of the discussion called upon the government to abrogate all those laws, which were discrimination towards the weaker section of the society including children, women and minorities.
Qudsia Lodhi, while taking part in the discussion, said the government was making all out efforts for the welfare and economic empowerment of women enabling them to play their due role in the development of the country. She added the government was chalking out a plan to enhance the number of jobs for women in the public sector. She was of the view that women in our part of the world were more empowered as compared to rest of the world.
Representatives of different NGOs complained the government always raised tall claims about protecting rights of women instead of taking any solid step for their well being. They demanded of the government to repeal the Hudood Ordinance.
