Middle class constitutes backbone of the economy and the government is committed to strengthen this segment and now all banks have started consumer, car and house financing schemes to trickle down the economic benefits to middle class. According to Punjab University's press release, Governor State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) Dr Ishrat Hussain stated this while addressing the inaugural ceremony of M Phil and Ph D classes at the Punjab University's economics department here on Thursday.
"The national economy has been showing positive signs as country's foreign reserves have increased manifold and trade deficit has reduced", the SBP governor said. Advising the students Ishrat said, "We should attach priority to quality education, professional skills, training and curriculum development, dynamic learning environment and quality of assessment and evaluation, if we want to revamp our existing educational structure."
He said the SBP had been promoting the economics education in the country by providing foreign scholarships, Qarz-e-Hasna and internship to brilliant students.
Speaking on the occasion, the vice-chancellor of the university, Arshad Mahmood said during the last 50 years from 1948 to 1998, PU produced only 740 Ph Ds, on the average 15 per year and in sciences only 244 Ph Ds on the average 5 per year. "To make up for this loss, the university has launched a regular Ph D programme of 24 credit hours course work in 32 disciplines in 2001 and now over 1000 Ph D candidates were registered with the university," he added. He said the university had formed a board to convert syllabus into curriculum to eradicate the menace of rote learning. The VC also presented shield to SBP governor.
Arshad also announced 15 computers for the economics department. Later, the VC distributed certificates among students for their outstanding performance. Department of Economics Chairman Professor Dr M Aslam also spoke on the occasion.
Moreover, a delegation of 20-student from the National University of Modern Languages (NUML) Islamabad led by Brigadier Saulat Raza (Retd) visited the Department of Mass Communication Punjab University. Vice-chancellor Arshad Mahmood briefed the team on the academic and structure developments made in recent years. He underlined the importance of mass media in transmitting information to the masses.-PR
