Whenever there a VVIP security arrangement is made in Karachi, ordinary people are taken hostage at the gun-point by the law enforcing agencies. The city becomes a complete mess in terms of traffic congestion and people go through such level of discomfort that is hard to describe in a few lines in these columns.
Hours before the routes from which VVIPs are to pass the roads are blocked, pedestrians are not allowed to even cross the roads, so much so that car-owners, who normally park their vechiles outside their offices and showrooms, are forced by the police to take them away to a nearby place, otherwise the police would lift their cars through cranes them to some unknown place.
The recent visit of Prime Minister to Karachi was once again a test of patience of the Karachities. People were helpless. They were asked by the security agencies to remain at their point and wait until the VVIP's convoy has passed from the road. In addition to this, shopkeepers and owners of the petrol pumps are also directed to shut down their businesses, until police give them a green signal to re-open.
Instead of turning a metropolitan city into a total chaos, I would request the Chief Minister of Sindh to announce the days until the President or the Prime Minister remains in the city as official holidays. Further more people should be asked to confine themselves within the boundary walls of their houses or apartments, until such time the President and the Prime Minister leave the city.
