At a Press conference in Washington Benazir Bhutto urged Bush to link aid with democracy. She wants it to be put on hold till full democracy is restored in Pakistan and General Musharraf gives way to a civilian President. Madam, aid is for the country and its people and not for its rulers, though in the past some filled their own coffers with it.
Except for the motorway there are no visible signs of any development in the country for the billions received before October 1999. Try as much as anyone, Musharraf is going to be around in uniform till 2007.
Maybe thereafter he doffs it or some other civilian president appears on the scene.
Under such obvious circumstances, why deny Pakistan and its masses the fruits of development for that long - a country and people that you profess to hold dearer than your life. Or is it that you and Zardari once again are hoping to be the main utilisers of this aid?
