The Chief Justice of the Lahore High Court (LHC) Justice Iftikhar Hussain Chaudhry, while dismissing the petition filed by M.D. Tahir advocate against compulsory wearing of helmet, has observed that violation of traffic laws must be checked by the police. The Chief Justice also directed all the magistrates who are required to deal with challans of such violators to treat the violators in a lenient way for a period of at least 30 days. The court also sent a copy of the order to district and sessions judges who shall comply with the order.
The court also directed the police to release the motorcycles if detained. The court further observed that the police should launch an awareness programme so that motorcyclist may be persuaded to use the helmets for safety.
The court further observed that the use of helmet is in public interest.
