The process of trade liberalisation is an integral part of current trends in globalisation, and Pakistan wants to reap the benefits of increased growth, which is the process of liberalisation promises. This was stated by Ismail M Qureshi, Federal Secretary Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock while inaugurating a day-long seminar on 'Making Trade Liberalisation Work For The Poor' held here on Monday.
The federal secretary said as a signatory to the World Trade Organisation's agreements, Pakistan's trade, industry and agriculture sectors were undergoing changes in compliance with the WTO rules and regulation.
A strategic approach, he added was being adopted to address poverty and increase agricultural growth.
Highlighting the role of International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) in Pakistan's agricultural development, Qureshi mentioned the institute lent significant support that led to the abolition of the ration shop system for wheat (flour) and agricultural credit reforms. He hoped that IFPRI would extend such support in future as well.
Dr Badaruddin Soomro, Chairman Pakistan Agricultural Research Council said the topic called for sustainable development, which meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs.
He added that the seminar's deliberations would provide a base in evolving the pro-poor interventions and strategies in agriculture.
Besides others, Dr Sohail J Malik, Chairman Innovative Development Strategic, Qasim Niaz, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Commerce, Dr Rashid Raza Faruqi and Senior Policy Advisor, Minfal also addressed the seminar.
