The District Public Safety and Police Complaints Commissions (DPS and PCCs) are bound to prepare their annual performance reports under the amendment of the Police Order-2002, said Director General of National Police Bureau Dr Mohammad Shoaib Siddle on Monday. The Police Order-2002 has been amended in November 2004, he told PTV. In the amendment, he said the district public safety commission (DPSC) has been changed into the district public safety and police complaints commission (DPSC and PCC).
The commissions would evaluate performance of police in their respective districts and mention it in the annual reports, including number of complaints registered against the police and about disposal of these. He said special powers had been given to these commissions to address grievances of masses pertaining to police.
"The commissions can summon anybody by using powers of civil court. They can record evidences on oath and issue orders to produce documents," the DG added.
He linked the improvement in police performance with the existence of a credible system, which provides remedy against the police high-handedness.
The existence of DPS and PCCs provides such forum where general masses of the country can approach and register their complaints against the police, he said.
He said police-people co-operation and friendly atmosphere would improve the performance of the police department.
