The Karachi Nuclear Power Plant (KANUPP) is going to double its power generation capacity from current 50 MW to 100 MW by June 2006. This was stated by KANUPP complex General Manager Qamarul Huda while talking to newsmen on the sidelines of a workshop here on Monday. He said: "We are planning to build two plants of 300 MW each or one with 600 MW capacity in KANUPP-II." He further said that contact for Chashma nuclear power plant Unit-II had been signed with China and work on this project was progressing.
"The operation of Chashma Unit-II, located at Mianwali, is going on smoothly after resolving teething technical problems," he added.
He said the KANUPP, established in 1972, had completed its design life of 30 years in December 2002 and then went through a 14-momth long re-licensing outage during which extensive refurbishing and up-gradation was carried out. The most notable activities included replacement of the cold and outdated plant control system and most the related instrumentation, he added.
After due licensing, he added, by the Pakistan Nuclear Regulatory Authority, (PNRA), the plant is now back in operation with about 50 percent of its rated power capacity.
"During the next year, we plan to upgrade as required by the nuclear regulators, some more safety systems, after which we look forward to plant's good operation at higher power levels for the next 15 years," he added.
