On the reported initiatives taken by Sheikh Rashid Ahmad and Omar Ayub Khan, the Capital Development Authority has decided to conduct feasibility study for constructing a tunnel to link Islamabad with Hazara Division.
The proposed 15-km long tunnel is estimated to cost billions of rupees. The proposal has recently been debated in the print and electronic media, highlighting its various technical, environmental, security and social demerits.
Yet, CDA seems to be going ahead, rather speedily, with the project's implementation. In one of the programmes on a private channel, the emerging leader of housing mafia admitted that land has already been acquired by them on the other side of Margalla Hills to develop a housing scheme there.
He had the guts to say on the air that if CDA would not construct the tunnel, he would purchase the hills and construct tunnel at his cost.
Does CDA plan to construct the tunnel for the benefit of public or for the vested interest of the housing mafia and its collaborators?
Are the President and Prime Minister aware of the situation?
