The City Council has approved Rs 70 million for the 120-bed Karachi Institute of Heart Diseases medical equipment which may be acquired in a fortnight. According to sources, the equipment to be acquired is meant for two Angiography Labs, 2 Ett, 2 Echo, 2 X-Rays, 1 C Arm. 2 laboratories well equipped, 1 Pathological laboratory. The hospital has 60 doctors, of whom 8 are specialists.
Meanwhile, despite serious shortage of medicines for the past nine months in all City Government hospitals, maternity homes and dispensaries, its health department failed to award a tender. EDO Health Dr Nizamuddin Memon said that tenders would be opened towards the end of this month.
The CDGK operates 14 major hospitals, namely Abbasi Shaheed Hospital (ASH), Safaraz Rafiquee Shaheed Hospital (SRSH), Spencer Eye Hospital (SHE), Sobhraj Hospital, Primary Health Care Liyari, Leprosy Hospital, Gazdarabad Maternity Home, Saudabad Hospital, Liaqatabad Govt Hospital, Ibrahim Hydari Hospital, Qatar Hospital and New Karachi Hospital.
Besides these, a number of maternity homes and dispensaries are also run by CDGK.
Regarding the quality of medicines, substandard medicines had been supplied to the hospitals in the past.
