Israeli authorities charged nuclear whistleblower Mordechai Vanunu on Thursday with violating the terms of his release by speaking to reporters and trying to visit the West Bank, judicial officials said. "They can charge me 50 times if they want. I will continue speaking to the press," Vanunu told Reuters by telephone. He has not been taken into custody. A former nuclear technician who served an 18-year-term for spilling Israeli atomic secrets to a British newspaper, Vanunu was released from prison last April under orders not to speak to the media and to remain inside Israel.
He was charged with 21 counts of violating the restrictions, some of which are due to expire next month, Israel Army Radio reported.
Vanunu has given a number of interviews to the foreign press and was detained briefly by police after he tried to visit the West Bank town of Bethlehem last Christmans.
A convert to Christianity, he has said he wants to leave Israel once the one-year travel ban is lifted.
