The Senate Standing Committee on Social Welfare and Special Education has expressed its concern over the non-availability of the complete data of registered non-governmental organisations (NGOs). The committee, which met here with Senator Roshan Khurshid Bharucha in the chair, directed the ministry of social welfare and special education to keep a comprehensive record of NGOs' registration, funding institutions and evaluation of funds in different fields.
The secretary ministry of social welfare and special education informed the committee that the ministry was trying to streamline the NGOs under single act of registration, which would enable it to update the record.
The secretary told the committee that the ministry had launched district based NGO concept connected with the centre to have a complete check on the activities of all organisations and update the data with the passage of time.
The secretary also informed the committee that a computerised system was soon going to be introduced at the district level to bring transparency in the system of registration of social work organisations.
The members of the committee were of the opinion that NGOs were serving humanity, which was a noble cause, but some elements had used it for their personal gains.
