Registration of candidates for the forthcoming parliamentary elections of Afghanistan will start on April 26 and would continue for three weeks all over the country, reports Pajhwok Afghan News. Peter Erben, a member of the joint electoral management body said at a press conference in Kabul that three weeks would be enough for those who want to stand as candidates. Mohammad Azam of Independent Electoral Commission said that the registration process would continue up to May 16.
The United Nations Assistance Mission for Afghanistan (Unama), which will help the Afghan government organise the poll, says the government does not plan to change the electoral law despite the insistence of some political parties and election experts.
The electoral law is currently based on single non-transferable vote system. Erben said 5000 to 10,000 candidates may nominate themselves for 249 seats.
Erben said there would be 30,000 polling stations and 5,000 constituencies all over Afghanistan with 1,87,000 staff working on the voting day. Around 4,300 Afghan employees and 425 internationals will be working to enhance public awareness in parts of the country about how to vote.
