Roses in May became America's fifth winner in the 10 runnings of the world's richest race the 6million dollar Dubai World Cup here on Saturday. The American horse trained by Dale Romans and ridden by John Velasquez beat home Saudi challenger Dynever while another American runner Choctaw Nation was third. Roses in May - the class horse in the race having finished second in the Breeders Cup Classic last year - was brought up to the front by Velasquez early in proceedings to lie on the shoulder of South African challenger Yard-Arm.
Velasquez riding one of the races of his life took him to the front rounding the final bend with Choctaw Nation looming round the outside but still a way off.
Down the straight Victor Espinoza on Choctaw Nation edged nearer and nearer as he overhauled Jack Sullivan for second and looked as if he could take the leader.
However he ran out of gas in the final 200metres and it was Dynver, trained by Frenchman Christophe Clement, who looked the likeliest challenger.
Velasquez, though, had enough left in his horse to breach the line one length to the good of Dynever while Choctaw Nation took a valiant third and English runner Jack Sullivan was a gallant fourth.
