The Central Board of Revenue (CBR) has decided to bring all the manufacturers within the tax net under the drive of broadening the tax base. CBR Chairman Adbullah Yusuf told Public Accounts Committee (PAC) on Wednesday that the exercise would help in bringing the entire chain of manufacturers, distributors, dealers and retailers within the tax net. First, it is important to bring manufacturers who have the complete details about their distributors, dealers and retailers.
Secondly, once all the manufacturers come under the tax system, it would be easy for the tax authorities to also register distributors etc with the sales tax department on the basis of information available from the manufacturers.
Yusuf said that a registered person can enjoy many benefits, like claiming refund and input tax credit, as compared to persons operating out of the tax regime.
The CBR has recently launched a fresh campaign to unearth wholesalers and distributors not registered with the sales tax department in Karachi, Lahore and Faisalabad. The manufacturers engaged in production of consumable items, like air conditioners, refrigerators etc have agreed to cooperate with the tax authorities. The manufacturers have assured to provide the relevant data to the tax authorities for bringing unregistered wholesalers and distributors within the tax net.
TAX EVASION: Responding to a query raised by Qurban Ali Shah at the PAC meeting, Yusuf said the CBR has received reports about evasion of general sales tax (GST) by sugar industry, but the tax authorities will be able in a position to comment on the issue after completion of investigation.
He said that the CBR was examining data from different sources and, after completion of the exercise, the tax authorities would submit report on the issue.
"I am not 100 percent sure about the sales evasion by sugar industry. An analysis of data will give us factual status on the issue," he added.
