Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz on Friday underlined the need for new initiatives and attracting investors in the agro-based industries to realise full potential of the agriculture sector in Pakistan. While reviewing the quarterly goals of the Food, Agriculture and Livestock Ministry, he noted improvement in agriculture production in the recent years. He said enhanced production had been possible due to increase in per acre yield, which reflected the success of the policies pursued by the government.
The government, he added, attached highest priority to agriculture as it was the backbone of the economy and could bring a revolution in the lives of the people in the rural areas.
He said by the grace of God and due to the policies being pursued by the government, the agriculture sector has shown growth for the second consecutive year.
It was expected that the target of 21.2 million tonnes set for wheat will Insha-Allah be achieved, he added.
The food and agriculture minister said that as compared to the last year the production of cotton, wheat, sunflower and rice have increased by 40 percent, 8.7 percent, 3.2 percent and 4 percent, respectively.
He said increase in production was attributed mostly to increase in per acre yield, which reflected that the agriculture sector has responded to the policies of the government.
