Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz has granted permission for the establishment of a separate pharmaceutical zone at Gwadar Port. Federal Health Minister Muhammad Naseer Khan stated this while speaking at the inauguration of Pakistan Pharmacist House at Gulshan-e-Maymar on Saturday evening. He said the work for this zone would begin soon. This would be exclusively for pharmaceutical Industry including manufacturing units, distributors and wholesalers.
The minister said he wanted to give boost to health sector in the country and added the doctors and their representative or organisations should also work for this cause. He said the summary for the appointment of pharmacists at government hospitals at Tehsil levels has been sent for approval and this would be announced in the next budget.
Naseer pointed out the volume of imported medicines has grown from dollars 900 million to dollars 1.03 billion during two-and-a-half years. He advised doctors and their associations to play their role in discouraging over the counter (OTC) sale of drugs and substandard medicines. He noted that nowhere in the world expired medicines and medicines stolen from hospital were sold in the market except Pakistan.
Earlier, Pakistan Chemist and Druggists Association Sindh Zone Chairman Haji Hanif Blue in his welcome address assured the Health Minister of Association's support for the implementation of Drug Act in accordance with the Prime Minister's instructions.
