Malaysian share prices closed 0.87 percent lower on Monday as investors remained sidelined in the absence of fresh positive news and sentiment was undermined by heavy Wall Street losses which sparked a regional sell-off, dealers said. The Kuala Lumpur Composite Index was down 7.59 points to 866.66. Volume was 277.48 million shares worth 577.53 million ringgit (73 million dollars). Losers outnumbered gainers 595 to 148, while 254 stocks were unchanged and 318 untraded.
"The market was listless with volume at a pathetic level. It is struggling to cross the 300 million shares mark. Nobody wants to look at the market today," said a local brokerage dealer.
Among blue chips, Tenaga Nasional was up 0.10 ringgit at 10.40. After the market close it reported its second quarter net profit climbed to 295.1 million ringgit from 57.1 million last year. Telekom Malaysia lost 0.15 to 9.50 and Malayan Banking shed 0.10 to 11.10.
