England's Luke Donald said his first major victory could be just around the corner after a spectacular third-place finish on his US Masters debut. Donald, brimming with confidence after mastering the Augusta course, also said on Tuesday that he hoped to break into the world top 10 this year. "I believe I'm going to win a major some time soon," said Donald ahead of the 2.3 million dollar Johnnie Walker Classic in Beijing. Donald, 27, currently sits 13th in the world rankings after placing second at this year's Buick Invitational and US PGA Players Championship and a breakthrough 2004 in which he played a key role in Europe's Ryder Cup victory.
But the former art student, who said he had been brushing up on his bunker shots, wants to go further this year."The way my game has progressed over the last year gave me a lot of confidence. I went into the Masters the best I had ever been playing and if it wasn't for a 77 on the second round I probably could have won," said Donald, who shared third with Retief Goosen behind Tiger Woods and Chris DiMarco.
Donald, a four-time winner since turning pro four years ago, also said he hopes to trump fellow Johnnie Walker Classic competitors Sergio Garcia, Paul Casey and Adam Scott to become the first to win a major.
Goosen, world number three Ernie Els, reigning champion Miguel Angel Jimenez and Colin Montgomerie will also grace a glittering line-up at the Pine Valley course which is hosting the richest golf competition ever played in mainland China.
