Adequate amount of water is available for Kharif season, said Indus River System Authority (Irsa) on Wednesday. According to official sources, Kharif crops would have excessive water this year as compared to the previous year adding that better Kharif was expected due to sufficient water. It was learnt that last year 59 million-acre feet (MAF) water was available for Kharif crops while this year it is being expected that crops will get 72 million acre (MAF) water.
Sources said all the four provinces were receiving water according to their demand, adding there was no cut on water supply to the provinces.
Irsa Advisory Committee in its last meeting also expressed satisfaction over the water availability for Kharif. All participants of the Committee agreed that as there was no shortage of water therefore provincial indents could be met in full even as per Para-2 of the Water Apportionment Accord 1991.
They were also agreed to the anticipated water availability for Kharif-2005 season prepared by Irsa.
Sources said that it had been decided that the river inflow position would be reviewed after early Kharif-2005 period for finalisation of balance Kharif-2005 anticipated criteria (January 11, 2005 - Sep 30, 2005).
