Norwich City manager Nigel Worthington admitted his team still had a long way to go to preserve their Premiership status despite a dramatic 2-1 victory over Newcastle United here at Carrow Road. Record-signing Dean Ashton struck deep into stoppage time to seal the points after Patrick Kluivert had scored in the 90th minute to cancel out Youssef Safri's magnificent long-range strike. But the East Anglians remained bottom of the table on goal difference and two points away from safety despite their second victory in three games.
Worthington felt Safri's 35-yard strike was a contender for goal of the season but reserved special praise for Ashton, who scored his fourth goal in three games to give Norwich real belief they can stay up.
Magpies boss Graeme Souness admitted it had been one of his worst weeks in football as his team slumped to a fourth consecutive defeat.
This latest reverse came as Newcastle were still recovering from last week's exits in both the UEFA Cup and FA Cup.
But Souness felt Newcastle had been unlucky against Norwich after dominating the first-half.
