Sugarcane varieties prepared at Sugarcane Research Institute, Faisalabad possess higher yield potential and proper management and adoption of modern technology could lead to higher sugarcane yield in the country. This was revealed at a sugarcane workshop arranged by Sugarcane Research Institute, Faisalabad at Sugarcane Research Area to highlight the research and development activities of the institute. Muhammad Ashraf Cheema, E.D.O. Agriculture, Faisalabad was the chief guest at the occasion and research scientists, growers and representatives of sugarcane industry attended the workshop.
Dr Arshad Ali Chattha, Director, Sugarcane Research Institute in his welcome address described in detail the characteristics of sugarcane varieties produced at the institute and welcomed the participants for attending the workshop.
It was told that sugarcane variety SPF-234 released in 2002 has the yield potential of 1600 maunds per acre with sugarcane recovery of 11.60 percent. The other variety HSF-240 also released in 2002 has the yield potential of 1500 maunds and sugar recovery 11.70 percent.
Among the promising varieties HSF-242 has the yield potential of 1600 maunds and sugar recovery 12.50 percent, CPF-243 has the yield potential 1500 maunds per acre and sugar recovery 12.65 percent, SPF-245 has the yield potential 1500 maunds and sugar recovery 11.50 percent, CPHS-35 has the yield potential 1600 maunds and sugar recovery 11.60 percent, S98-SP-646 has the yield potential 1250 maunds and sugar recovery 10.35 percent, S98-SP-108 has the yield potential 1300 maunds per acre and sugar recovery 11.70 percent and S96-SP-228 possesses the yield potential 1400 maunds per acre with sugar recovery 10.25 percent.
