My son has ended his school life. Soon he will be in his college, and with this he will be in his manhood. When he will look back, how would he find his school life? Will this make him nostalgic? Or will he only remember the his 'ghastly' efforts of memorising long lessons word by word, line by line - day in day out?
My son was a student at a school of a once renowned and revered college-chain, Islamabad College for Boys. Has this college imbued anything in the formative mind of my son, and that of many others, which can be cherished by these boys when they become full grown men? I don't see so.
The college never arranged any tour of any kind to entertain the boys, or educate them about the cultural/historical heritage, and the geographical wonders etc of our country. The college never encouraged the boys in any sports, games and team events etc. I still remember the annual sports meets of my school days, but my sons are devoid of any such things. They won't ever be able to recall any colourful school day of their lives.
My son does not know what a school/college library is. He and other students were never shown the path towards the library. They were never made enthusiastic about books other than the text books, and were never given the enjoyment and excitement of getting issued books of their choice from the school/college library. The students were never encouraged to read daily the newspapers to keep them abreast with the interesting affairs of the world.
My son and his friends would never know what inter-school/inter-collegiate competitions are, and what sort of excitement and enjoyment one can get from these healthy competitions.
There is really nothing in my son's school life that he could cherish for his life. Is there any one in authority to think on this? Is there anyone who could make school life cherishable and nostalgic? Please give it a thought!
